There is growing optimism for a significant U.S.-UK trade agreement, according to U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who highlighted President Donald Trump’s deep admiration for the United Kingdom and its royal family. Speaking to UnHerd on Tuesday, Vance emphasized the strong cultural and business ties between the two countries, stating that the Trump administration is working closely with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to achieve a deal that benefits both sides.
Despite being spared the harshest tariffs in Trump’s latest trade policy, British imports into the U.S. still face a 10% charge, while steel and automotive exports are hit with a 25% tariff. Nonetheless, the two nations are reportedly making progress in ongoing discussions, initially centered on cooperation in artificial intelligence and technology but now potentially expanding into areas like food and other goods.
Vance pointed to the President’s affection for the UK, stating, "He loved the Queen. He admires and loves the King. It is a very important relationship." He also cited the shared cultural heritage between the U.S. and Britain as a key driver for optimism.
Known for his strong stance on European defense spending, Vance also addressed tensions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Responding to Zelenskiy’s claims that Vance had justified Russia’s invasion, the Vice President clarified that he had condemned Russia since 2022. However, he said it was vital to understand both Russian and Ukrainian strategic interests to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Vance criticized Zelenskiy’s rhetoric as unproductive, especially given the significant American support sustaining Ukraine’s government and military efforts. "It’s absurd to suggest the U.S. is siding with Russia while we’re funding Ukraine’s entire war effort," he added.
