Donald Trump, being the POTUS during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, is keen on recovering from the massive blunder. Among the strategies that his camp his looking into is the health sector and how they can improve the laws governing it.
However, most of the Republicans are treading this path carefully since Donald Trump’s own take on the matter is repealing Obamacare entirely. Aides and allies of the POTUS are wary about this route since the GOP suffered quite the disastrous aftermath when they pursued the endeavor back in 2017, Politico reported.
To make matters worse, some of Donald Trump’s supporters – particularly those vulnerable if OCA is gutted – might turn on him should they replace the current system. As such, one of the approaches that the GOP wants to explore is to weaken the perspective of people towards Obamacare and proffer the idea that it has failed those it has mandated to protect.
What’s more, Donald Trump’s camp is also trying to point out that the Democrats’ Medicare-For-All will be damaging the protection that OCA has put in place. However, some – if not most – of the POTUS’ aides are trying to dissuade Trump from going after OCA and advised him to focus on attainable goals.
This is especially true since the Democrats are in control of the House right now. If Donald Trump wants to replace OCA altogether, he needs a detailed plan that will clearly state it’s an improvement to the current system. But that is a lofty goal at the moment. Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) previously said that the Republicans are better off focusing on specific goals such as drug pricing.
“I’ve been through the wars and I have a Ph. D in health care policy now that was never on my bucket list,” Meadows said. “It’s very difficult to find anything that brings everybody together. But I do think there’s real consensus that could be found on prescription drug prices — in fact, if there’s a sweet spot to be found, it’s that.”
